One of the centerpieces of what constitutes healthy living exercise and physical activity. However, sport may not be sufficient to counteract the damage generated by sitting for long periods of time, according to a team of European researchers.
In fact, specialists at the Karolinska Institute believe it is more important to focus on the problems caused by inactivity daily exercise regularly.
The results of this study were very surprising, because physical activity is associated with many health benefits, including a decrease in weight, improvement in the cardiovascular system, benefits to the muscles and bones, and also contributes to maintaining a good mood, among many other benefits. However, Swedish researchers say that these benefits do not offset the effect of immobility.
THE RISK OF SITTING
In their study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the researchers pointed out that long in the seat and lack of muscle movement are strongly associated with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and increased risk overall death.
To make matters worse, it appears that physical activity, even regularly, failing to counter the health problems generated by being too long in the saddle.
The Swedish team cited a study conducted in Australia and who argue that in parallel with their own findings. Their Australian colleagues found that every extra hour a woman passes in front of the TV leads to a 26% greater risk of having metabolic syndrome, a precursor of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Again, these negative statistics remain unchanged for the ladies who are physically active.
A NEW PARADIGM
The experts from the Karolinska Institute suggested a new paradigm or model of “physiological inactivity,” which just sets to sit too long and non-muscular activity generates affects health independently of how a person performs.
In other words: molecular and physiological responses that the body has in response to inactivity are not removed during sports activities.
The authors stressed that much remains to be investigated, but risking some tips: climb the stairs, take five minutes rest in the middle of sedentary work and walking instead of taking the car.
